SSAFA Health Visitor Tel: 403 544 5572 Immunisations

Immunisations are carried out in Ralston Village under the direction of the SSAFA Palliser Health nurses. Medicine Hat children living in Medicine Hat will need to attend the Medicine Hat Health Unit.

Emergency Services

Anyone requiring emergency medical services on the Base or in Ralston should contact Tel:403 5444 911. The Base Fire Hall will send out an emergency response vehicle, and a paramedic unit will be dispatched from Medicine Hat.

Ambulances Unlike the UK, ambulances in Canada are not provided free of charge and your AHC card will not entitle you to the free use of an ambulance. At present, charges incurred through dispatch of an ambulance will be covered by the BATUS medical budget although current policies may be subject to change. Lack of personal transport for a non-emergency does not justify the calling of an ambulance and charges may apply.

Additional Health Care Insurance

It is advisable to take out additional health care insurance if travelling outside of Alberta Canada, as AHC and the BATUS medical budget will not cover any medical costs incurred whilst outside Canada. Top up insurance can be obtained from:

Thomsen Fisher, Tel 403 526 2885; e-mail@thomsenfisher.com; http://www. thomsenfisher.com/

Eye Examinations and Purchase of Spectacles BATUS permanent staff are entitled to one free eye test per year. Children up to the age of 16 years and those up to the age of 19 years in full time education are entitled to eye examinations under the AHC system. Children at boarding school and who visit Canada are not eligible for free eye examinations. The BATUS approved Optician is 20/20 Vision Care in Medicine Hat. Prior to making an appointment, written authorisation must be obtained from the BATUS Medical Centre.

Service personnel and their spouses are responsible for the purchase of their own spectacles or contact lenses, however Service issue frames are available for Service personnel. Children under the age of 16 years or those up to 19 years in full time education are eligible for one pair of glasses to the current maximum value of £70 (or CAD equivalent). This amount may be exceeded if there is a medical condition, which warrants specialised items. Seek approval from the SMO.

Hearing Aids

Under the NHS serving personnel and their dependants are entitled to a basic non- digital hearing aid and coverage for repairs. In BATUS, if your hearing aid is beyond economical repair, a letter of authority will be issued by the SMO to attend a practice to obtain a new aid to a set financial limit. Should you decide on an aid above this limit, the excess cost will be met by yourself.
