Eine der auffälligen Veränderungen der letzten zwölf Monate in der Turnierszene war die große Anzahl von Twens an den


Finaltischen.


Es konnte fast der Eindruck entstehen, dass mit dem 30. Geburtstag die Wahrscheinlichkeit, eine Platzierung unter den Top Ten zu erreichen, so gut wie auf null absinkt. Und dieses Phänomen trat weltweit auf, in Europa, Amerika und Asien / Australien. Früher war es einmal so, dass Erfahrung wichtig


war. Die älteren Spieler, die ein oder zwei Jahrzehnte Turnierspiel auf dem Buckel hatten, schafften es stetig, sich ihren Anteil an den Wettbewerben zu sichern; aber heutzutage haben sie Schwierigkeiten. Sogar die Stars der Szene verlieren zunehmend an Boden. Zahlreiche Kommentatoren sind der Meinung, Poker sei zu einem Spiel für junge Leute geworden, da diese über besondere Fähigkeiten verfügten (Durchhaltevermögen und so viel Erfahrung durch Onlinespiel wie man sie früher nur in einem ganzen Pokerleben sammeln konnte) – dies mache den entscheidenden Vorteil aus.


Für die ältere Generation, und damit meine ich die


über 40-jährigen Spieler, die seit einigen Jahrzehnten dabei sind, kann dies sehr frustrierend sein. Glücklicherweise habe ich nun herausgefunden, woran es liegt. Ganz einfach: Es gibt schlicht und ergreifend


mehr Twens als ältere Spieler! In vielen Turnieren sind die Youngsters mit Abstand am zahlreichsten vertreten, und damit besteht natürlich eine deutlich höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass dann auch mehrere von ihnen die Finals erreichen.


Ich will damit nicht sagen, dass ich die meisten


von ihnen nicht für gute Spieler halte, sondern einfach nur auf die unausgewogenen Zahlenverhältnisse hinweisen, auf die ihre scheinbare Vorherrschaft höchstwahrscheinlich zu einem großen Teil zurückzuführen ist.


In einer ähnlichen Situation befi nden sich die weiblichen Spieler: Gelegentlich wird behauptet, sie würden weniger Turniere gewinnen als Männer, weil sie einfach nicht die notwendigen Voraussetzungen mitbringen. Falsch! Dass sie weniger Events gewinnen liegt einfach nur daran, dass es so viel mehr männliche Pokerspieler gibt als weibliche.


Meine Botschaft für das neue Jahr lautet also:


Die Youngsters verfügen doch nicht über Zauberkräfte – sondern sie sind ganz normale Spieler, für die wie für alle an manchen Tagen alles richtig läuft. Und nur, falls Sie sich dies gefragt haben sollten: Ich bin immer noch davon überzeugt, dass Erfahrung sehr wichtig ist.

One of the noticeable aspects of tournament fi nal tables in the past 12 months has been the presence of so many players in their twenties.


Sometimes it seems that being aged thirty or more makes players ineligible to make it through to the top ten. It is the same the whole world over, Europe, America and Australasia.


Once upon a time experience seemed to count for something. Older players with a decade or two of tournament play managed to win their share of competitions but these days they are having a hard time of it. Even the stars of the scene are being eclipsed. Now many commentators are suggesting that poker has become “a young man’s game” and suggesting that they have special attributes (stamina and the equivalent of a lifetime’s experience in online poker for example) which gives them an edge.


This can be rather off-putting for the older generation – by which I mean players of 40 plus who have been in the game for a couple of decades or more. Luckily I have discovered the truth. Quite simply the twenty something brigade outnumber everyone else. In many tournaments this age group is by far the largest so the chances of several of them making it through to fi nals are considerably increased.


This is not to suggest that most of them are not good players, merely to point out that there is an age group imbalance which is most likely a major factor in their apparent dominance. It is similar to the position in which women players fi nd themselves. Some would have it that members of the fair sex win fewer tournaments than men because they don’t have what it takes. Wrong. It is simply that they win events less often because they are so heavily outnumbered by the poker-playing males of the species. So my message for the New Year is this: the youngsters don’t have any magical powers – they are just players for whom things went right on the day. And, just in case you are wondering, I still believe that experience counts for a lot.
