Winner Nick Abou Risk of Canada celebrates his second UKIPT win with his friends!
programmer. The winning hand was one Doyle Brunson would have been familiar with, 10-2 suited.
He told me that he got started
playing poker with friends at home and started playing seriously about three years ago. He plays limit cash hold’em games and no limit tournaments online mostly. He is a good friend of Dublin UKIPT winner, Max Silver, and the two regularly discuss poker strategy. He credits Max with helping him to succeed and said: ”Max has an amazing poker mind.”
I asked Nick how he felt about winning this event and he replied: “It feels unreal. In reality I expect to bust out of most tournaments.” Then I asked him how he felt about winning two UKIPT legs and he said: “It feels surreal but it also feels good to have won a second event. It solidifi es my position as a previous winner.” Talking about all his recent winnings he said that he had promised to take his wife on a nice cruise after his fi rst win. Now he needs to take her on a very nice cruise, soon. He added that he hoped to buy something nice for his parents at Christmas, perhaps a new car. The tournament was fi lmed for
Channel 4 television and you can catch the action over three or four episodes to be broadcast probably in February. Apart from the freeroll, there
were four side events over the weekend. The fi rst of these was a 350 freezeout
with 63 runners. The winner, picking up 8,650, was England’s Kevin Williams. Second spot and 4,450 went to Daragh Davey with Aparicio de Compos taking third place for 2,820. The next side event was a 250 freezeout which had 94 entries. Neil McGoarty took home 6,000 for top
spot with Jonathan Campbell picking up 4,600 for second place. Third place and 2,500 went to Vinny Cosgrove.

There was a heads up event with
a buy in of 1,000 + 100. As there were only 8 entries it ended up as a winner takes all showdown between Luke Marsh and Max Silver, with Luke taking the honours. The fi nal event was a 100
charity tournament for the Galway Deaf Society, with fi ve 100 bounties added by Poker Stars, who also donated extra cash to the charity for every bounty claimed. There were 53 runners that took part with Poker Stars team pro
Julian Thew taking the top prize of 2,120. Second place and 1,170 went to David Connors with Frederic Crenerinne picking up 850 for third spot.
I heard one really funny story which happened over the weekend. One particular player in a cash game had been making a general nuisance of himself for quite some time. He asked for a ruling from the fl oor supervisor on a point of dispute and was not about to agree with the ruling he received. He was eventually asked to leave the table at which point he threatened to call the local police! He carried out his threat and the police arrived in the room to see what all the fuss was about. The man who called the police was escorted by them from the building and has not been seen since. Many of the witnesses to these strange events are hoping he is still in police custody and will remain there for a very long time.
