Although the buy-in of £165 was small by present day standards players came from all over the country to the Circus Casino, Birmingham. The magnet was the fact that Genting had added £10,000 to the prize pool which ended up at £55,000 plus.
The organisers were clearly in a generous mood as a further £1,300, a seat in their London Palm Beach Casino “Big Game” event, was added while the fi nal table was in progress.
Main benefi ciary was 33-year-old Dominic Kay, an English Literature graduate turned poker pro from London who defeated veteran John Exley at the heads up stage. The pair had done a deal, £12,000 to Kay and £10,900 to Exley and played on for the trophy and the seat. The casino group’s initiative was rewarded with a fi eld of 302 participants for the two day event. Although it was played with 30 minute levels it ran for around ten hours on the fi rst day and a further six hours on day two.
