MATRIX MATTERS! Daniel H. Pink will speak on “Drive: What the Science of Motivation Can Teach You About High Performance” on Wednesday, March 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., during IHRSA’s 30th Anniversary International Convention and Trade Show, March 16-19, in San Francisco. His keynote presentation is generously sponsored by Matrix Fitness. —|

this quarter, isn’t the sort of motivator that’s going to inspire people to leap out of bed in the morning and race to work to do something amaz- ing. Indeed, when the profit motive isn’t accompanied by a purpose motive, bad things tend to happen— everything from mediocre offerings in the marketplace to serious ethical lapses.

CBI: Can your approach, your ideas, help companies deal with the current economic environment more effectively?

DP: Maybe. In tight times, businesses don’t have a lot of carrots to hand out. That means they have to rely on other means to create an environment that permits people to do great work. Recessions are also periods during which innovations—in products, services, and organizational meth- ods—often emerge.

CBI: You’ve observed, “There’s a mismatch between what science knows and what business does.” How can you get companies to face, and deal with, the real facts?

DP: I have a sense that the page is turning—that we’ve spent the last 10 years trying not to enter the 21st century and that, only now, are we finally ready and willing to take that step. That’s going to require that we reevaluate the way we’ve been doing things in business. It will also force us to upgrade, improve, our motivational operating system so that it’s appropriate for the times. One of the things that I like about science is that it often confirms our intuitions—for instance, that human beings aren’t merely donkeys chasing after the carrot or avoiding the stick. We have other drives. We do things because they’re interesting, because they matter, because they contribute to the world—that drive is the true source of high performance. —|
