| News & Know How | On The Move Anniversaries Midtown Tennis Club Celebrates 40 Years

The Midtown Tennis Club, a landmark in Chicago since it was founded in 1970, celebrated its 40th anniversary in October. The club—the first and largest indoor tennis facility of its kind— marked the milestone with a day-long celebration, which included a charity pro-am benefitting Chicago’s Tennis Opportunity program, as well as an evening celebration that featured some of the biggest names in the world of professional tennis. More than 1,200 guests attended, including 47 charter club

members; legendary tennis announcer Bud Collins; current U.S. Davis Cup Team captain and ESPN analyst Patrick McEnroe; 21-time doubles Grand Slam champion Patrick Shriver; and pro-playing brothers Murphy and Luke Jensen. There was also a surprise video tribute from eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi, who sent regards to his friend, Midtown founder Alan Schwartz, and recalled his first USTA tournament victory, which took place on Midtown’s courts when he was just 12. The highlight of the event came when Scott Waguespack,

Chicago’s 32nd Ward Alderman, announced the renaming of a portion of the street in front of the club. That portion of Elston Avenue will now be known as Alan Schwartz Drive. “We didn’t build this club to compete with our competition,”

Schwartz told the crowd. “Instead, we wanted to play a significant role in growing the overall popularity of the sport in Chicago. I have a tremendous amount of pride and appreciation not only for this facility, but also for our members and staff of teaching professionals who have helped Midtown become one of the most-recognized tennis clubs in the world.” —|
