In this edition, we are covering the delightful country Turkey. Not only is this country known for its generosity and popularity in the largely visited tourist areas such as Marmaris but it’s also known for its delicious culinary skills. Kix as always, would like to advise you and inform you of yet another historically captivating and beautiful country. Did you know that its most popular sport is football! However, its national sport is actually oiled wrestling! Let’s delve further shall we?


How do you say hello in Turkish? Merhaba - but this is only if you are amongst friends and family. If you were approaching somebody on a less official basis it would be Selam.

What are the major industries in Turkey?


Tourism is a huge contributor to the country’s economy. As well as banking, construction, home appliances, electronics, textiles, oil refinery, mining, iron and steel.


Turkey has a growing automotive industry which has recently ranked 6th largest producer behind the United Kingdom and above Italy. In 2007, Turkey was listed 4th in the ship building industry.


Historically, what periods do you think had an effect on the country as a whole?


Turkey is officially known as the Republic of Turkey it is an Eurasian country. Turks began migrating to what is now known as Turkey in the 11th Century. This was followed by the battle of Manzikert which was won by the Seljuk. The Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm ruled Anatolia until the Mongol Empire’s invasion. In the 13th century the Ottoman bevlik united Anatolia and created an empire


encompassing much of


Southeastern Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. Following which, the Ottoman Empire collapsed after it’s World War I defeat. In 1923, Turkey became a modern Republic of Turkey due to the leadership of one military officer by the name of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk . He eventually became their first president.


Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary and constitutional republic with more and more involvement in the western society via channels such as; the Council of Europe, NATO and other G-20 major economies. Turkey now qualifies as a regional power owing to its large economy, location and army.


Is there a typical Turkish cuisine? There is not one single dish that is exclusively Turkey’s traditional dish but there are several that could be recognised as this. In the Black Sea region they are renowned for their corn and anchovies. Whilst in the Southeast they are famous for kebabs, mezes and baklava, kadyif which are dough based desserts.


What is the exact location of Turkey?


Turkey is west of Bosporus and borders the Black Sea between Bulgaria and Georgia, the Aegean Sea, Mediterranean Sea, between Greece and Syria.
