Donell Jones
Me & Mr Jones Interview by Julieanna Korell
Yes, ‘you know what’s up’ Donell Jones is back and the above words are taken straight from his latest single ‘Love like This’. I caught up with Mr Jones and got the low down on what he has been up to recently, info on his latest album and got an insight into how he gets his Kix!
Kix Mag: So…Donell where have you been? I know your fans have been missing you! What have you been up to recently?
Donell Jones: I just been on the road doing spot dates, getting the word out that the album is in stores now, and just reconnecting with my fans.
Kix: I understand the new album, ‘Lyrics’ released on your record label E1, hit the stores in September, what are the tracks to look out for on this?
Donell: ‘All about the Sex’, ‘Blackmail’, ‘The Finer things in Life’, ‘Oh how I wonder’, ‘Back Door’, the album in its entirety really.
Kix: You are known for your recognisable sound and style, which obviously we all know and love. However, would you ever consider moving away from this style and trying something new? Are there any songs on the album that offer something different to fans? Donell: There are three songs on album which are different to what I would usually do. But I have my own sound and will never move away from that, that’s my signature and I want to stick with that.
Kix: Have you collaborated with anyone on this album? Donell: Yes. Yung Joc on a track entitled ‘Strip Club’, an artist called Inessa Alex on ‘What’s Next’ and one of my artists Breeze.
Kix: The latest single out ‘Love like This’ which is also on the album…can you explain the concept behind this

and is this track dedicated to anyone in particular?
Donell: In typical Mr smooth style, Donell responded ‘The song is dedicated to all the women in the world. He continued, ‘in
relationships a lot of them don’t work, a lot of women have been duped in the relationship category, and a lot of them don’t want to share themselves with anybody anymore, and they have been turned off, so I want to put the message out there that its okay to love again – its like you’ve been hurt before but give a brother a chance, you never know what you might get’.
Kix: Have you always known you wanted to be a singer? Did you involve yourself in singing lessons or are you self taught?
Donell: I’ve always known I wanted to be a singer. I started singing at the age of 5, but I really knew that I wanted to be a musician when I was in high school. I was part of the school choir and I listened to my mother and father a lot and various artists that I loved and to be honest that was a form of teaching in itself.
Kix: Who were your inspirations? Donell: Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and my dad.
Kix: What would you do if you were not making music?
Donell: I can’t see myself doing anything else outside of music!
Kix: You have been around for a long time now, what does it take to have longevity in this game? Donell: Dedication. I’ve been in the business now for over 15 years and
