one thing I can say about myself is that I’ve always tried to stay true to what I do, my sound, and I think that’s what kept me around, not trying to slip into someone else’s shoes’
Kix: What advice would you give to those starting out that are tying to make it?
Donell: Originality, always try to be original, create something that you can call your own and stay true to that. Anything you want to be or become, you can, and the opportu- nities are there it’s what you do with them.
Kix: You’re touring the states now, but when can we next expect you in the UK?
Donell: I haven’t been in the UK now for about 1.5 years but I will be coming over next year and will be touring all over UK. I love the UK - support in the UK is off the chain, concerts are always sold out and the fans sing louder than me and I got the mic!’
Kix: What do you aim to achieve from making music? Donell: Success. I measure success differently to others, I just want people to continue listening to my music and support it, and get some inspiration from it, that’s success to me.
Kix: What would you say is your greatest achievement to date? Donell: Winning the American Music Award.
Kix: A lot of US artists cross over into acting, is this something that you would consider?
Donell: Acting isn’t really my cup of tea but if the chance was offered to me I would probably give it a go, but I would prefer to be more behind the scenes, doing the music for films. I have had a couple of my tracks out to date on ‘Love and Basketball’ and ‘Shaft’.
Kix: Everyone in the UK is going crazy about Twitter, I know that you too have a Twitter account, do you update this personally?
Donell: Yes, I am on Twitter and I do update this personally, so get all your friends and the whole of the UK to hit me up on that – DonellJones96.
Kix: How do you get your kix? Donell: By playing Xbox – I love my games, my name tag is DonellJones96 if anybody wants to play me! I also hang out a lot with my girl, we do a lot of things together.
