COMPANY Profile Simplex – the signmaker’s signmaker
Simplex was founded more than 22 years ago to supply modular sign systems exclusively to the sign trade. Over that time the company has increased the range of
signage it supplies. Initially by modifying the existing systems available to the trade with a more customised look, then increasingly, due to customer demand, into fully bespoke signage by use of sophisticated metalworking techniques and machinery along with employing the best craftsmen available. However, Simplex did not abandon modular signage but
instead, using its years of experience in constructing proprietary brands, realised that none of the proprietary brands provided complete solutions by virtue of their age or complexity. Consequently, Simplex developed its own range of systems with the emphasis on simplicity and cost. Within that range is Pole and Plank, an external modular
system that is probably the easiest system of its kind to assemble, meaning less time on site and therefore cost savings. Also, its design allows fabricated panels to be made from 2mm ACMs with none of the edges being visible, while it also fits more standard aluminium faces. An addition to the Pole and Plank range is the highly versatile fingerpost system.
System 4 was created in response to requests from the market.
Rather than the usual flat wall directories, Simplex designed a curved directory that allows changes to be effected without the use of special tools, whilst at the same time making it difficult for unauthorised changes to be made. This feature is due to the patented Gatorband system, which also ensures the faces of the bands remain flush even when different materials are incorporated in one directory. Formats available include wall mounted, monolith, paper insert and poster cases. As Simplex builds numerous bespoke signs and structures,
many of which require a strong sub-frame, the company has eliminated the need for welding in many cases with Frame-Build. An aluminium extrusion, this enables all sorts of sub-frames to be made that can be altered which are always square and lightweight. The concept is akin to the construction kits we all used to play with, only simpler.

is GPM Signs, whose customer base includes a lot of blue chip clients around the UK’s airports. GPM Signs approached Simplex after receiving an unusual enquiry for freestanding pods to house plasma screens, map panel and clock at Edinburgh airport. Due to the location of these structures they needed to have internal frames which could be manufactured in sections and put together on site. Frame build fitted the bill perfectly and GPM Signs was keen to work with the product. The photos show the internal frame and the finished product. Les Gunn Managing Director of GPM Signs said,
“The frame-build system was perfect for this job. It was quick and easy to use and gave us the opportunity to make adjustments on site, which we could not have done with a welded frame. The end result is very strong and our customer is extremely happy with the end result.”
