Hello again from the members of the Rotary Club of Great Harwood and Rishton. Polio Plus You may recall that last month mention was made of Rotary’s 25 years campaign to rid the world of polio and other children’s diseases. Known as ‘Polio Plus’ this project has cost some US$1.2BN. and has been a partnership involving the World Health Organisation and national governments, with Rotary leading the voluntary sector. In addition to the vast amounts raised by Rotary Clubs across the world, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have contributed US$555 million to Rotary International in recent years to support the project. Rotarians have also volunteered their time and expertise organising, and taking part in, hundreds of Immunisation Days across the globe. Only a few pockets of polio now remain in remote areas of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria and we are engaged in a final push, entitled ‘Thanks for Life’, to complete the work. Focus on the Crocus As part of this push Rotary Clubs in Britain and Ireland organised ‘Focus on the Crocus’, a scheme to plant nearly 6 million crocus bulbs in the UK and Ireland, working in partnership with The Eden Project, the International Flower Bulb Centre (IBC), The National Trust, Learning Through Landscape and others. Focus on the Crocus was devised as a healthy, fun, community based and environmental friendly way to provide everyone with the opportunity of being part of a historic worldwide campaign. The bulb planted is the Ruby Giant ‘purple' crocus representing the dye colour dabbed on children's little ‘pinkie' finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio. As our part in this project we orchestrated the planting of 17,000 crocus bulbs in Great Harwood and Rishton between 2nd and 16th October. Our partners in the scheme were all the schools in the two townships, Scouts, Soroptimists, Prospects, Hyndburn Council and individual volunteers, who planted bulbs in some 20 locations. Friends of the Memorial Park purchased 6,000 of the bulbs which they planted in the Park. The crocus will flower in February 2011, and every year thereafter, to remind us of the drive to eradicate polio, and to coincide with the anniversary of Rotary’s founding on 23rd February, 1905. The Club will be planning an event to coincide with the flowering in 2011 to celebrate the ‘purple’ occasion. Meanwhile, our thanks to all those who have taken part and we hope you enjoyed the experience. The Club meets weekly at 7pm for 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings at the Sparth House Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors. For more information telephone Secretary Graham Charnley on 01254 235142.

Councillor Malcolm Pritchard. Mayor of Hyndburn. We just seem to be getting busier and busier in the Mayor’s office. We’ve been lucky enough to meet lots of wonderful people again this month. Irene and I travelled to Warrington to join the other Mayor’s of Lancashire at the Duke of Lancaster ’s Annual Service of Remembrance which was very moving. The Accrington Lions Charter evening was a really good night and a big thank you goes to the Lions for donating £100 to the Mayor’s charity on the night. We attending the Accrington and Rossendale College awards evening on the 12th October and it was great to see the young people of Hyndburn getting some recognition for their hard work. The charity committee continued to work hard to raise money for our chosen charities. The final amount raised on the Race night was a whopping £800! The Ceilidh night at St Christopher’s High School was a great family night out. Many thanks to Rainbow Gallery of Queen Street, Great Harwood for sponsoring the event. The Christmas Extravaganza on the 4th December is getting bigger and bigger. We now have real reindeer coming into the town centre to parade. They will be outside the market hall all afternoon and there will be opportunities for photos in Santa’s sleigh. Throughout the day in Accrington Town Hall stall holders from around the county will be selling their beautiful gifts and handmade goods. There will be jewellery, art, make up, homeware, Christmas stationary and handmade cards, food and much more. Entry is free so make sure you come down and get some really individual gifts this year. For any more information on our upcoming events, to buy tickets or to make a donation or even to invite the Mayor and Mayoress to an event you are holding please contact the Mayor’s secretary on the details below: Rachel Leatherbarrow, The Mayor’s Office, Hyndburn Borough Council, Scaitcliffe House, Ormerod Street, Accrington, BB5 2PJ 01254 380285 rachel.leatherbarrow@hyndburnbc.gov.uk Good bye for now!
