End of Season Blues We have reached the end of the salmon fishing season for another year and we must leave them alone to get on with their spawning. It’s a vital time of year for this incredible species of fish as they have made their way thousands of miles from their Greenland/Icelandic feeding grounds. Atlantic salmon are known as the "king of fish," an appropriate title for many reasons. Atlantic salmon make a tremendous journey during their lifetime, migrating from the fresh water streams of their youth to feeding grounds in the north Atlantic Ocean and back again to spawn. Their capacity to return back to the same stream where they were hatched has captivated and mystified biologists for hundreds of years. Salmon are among the most beautiful of fish; stream-lined, silver and graceful. They are powerful, too, among the greatest fighters in the fishing world. And perhaps most important of all, Atlantic salmon are a symbol of clean, unspoiled waters that run wild to the sea. It is a tribute to our environmental agencies that more and more rivers are seeing salmon and seatrout returning and even getting higher up the rivers due to such projects as the salmon ladder on the Calder at Padiham.
Two lads were fishing in a boat when one of them hooked an enormous salmon. After half an hour playing the fish they finally managed to get it into the boat. “ That’s a very special spot for fishing .” Says one of the lads. “ Lets mark the spot.” So the other lad draws a big cross on the bottom of the boat with a marker pen. “That’s no good,” says the first lad, “next time we might not get the same boat.”
An American has been fishing for two weeks in Scotland without a single bite. On the last day of his trip he catches a small salmon. He turns to the Gillie and says “ This fish has cost me over $500 .” “ Well now sir,” says the Gillie, “ think yourself lucky you didn’t catch two.”
One Fisherman is bragging to another that last week he caught a 20lb salmon. “Were there any witnesses ?” asked the other fisherman. “Of course there were. Otherwise it would have weighed over 30 lb.”
