INSIDE Crochet | yarns we love yarNS love we

ith so many yarns out there, you don’t have to limit yourself to the ones we recommend for each pattern. To demonstrate, we’ve put together some great aran yarn alternatives for the Ammonite Scarf pattern (on page 22) for you to try! By Zoe Clements

W

Noro Silk Garden 45% silk, 45% kid mohair, 10% lamb's wool, 50g, 100m/109yd, dry clean

With the beautiful variegation we have come to love from Noro, this yarn has subtle flecks of preceding colours and tantalising glimpses of the colour yet to come. You can choose from 15 additional colourways and we used shade 47, which works really well with the Ammonite Scarf by reflecting the fossil-like design. There's an interesting variety of colours on each of the motifs, due to the length of the colourways, while the varied thickness and spin in the yarn also gives it an interesting texture. rrP £8.95, www.designeryarns.co.uk

Louisa Harding Kashmir Aran 55% merino wool, 35% microfibre, 10% cashmere, 50g, 75m/83yd, machine washable at 30°

C

This yarn is made up of a chain-link, which gives it an additional textured element. It's smooth, doesn't split and is quite a lightweight but substantial yarn. It works up into a soft, cosy and springy fabric that retains its shape well and resists pilling. There are 20 solid colours, but the woven construction gives it a lovely subtle tonality. The stitch definition is great and using this yarn for the Ammonite Scarf gives clear and strong motifs that result in quite a masculine-looking scarf. rrP £3.95, www.designeryarns.co.uk

Bergere de France Sport 51% wool, 49% acrylic, 50g, 90m/98yd, machine washable at 30°

C, dry flat

A hard-wearing yarn with a high wool content, this is a great choice for an everyday scarf. You can pop it in the washing machine, safe in the knowledge that there will be little or no pilling and it will hold its shape. It's a slightly lesser weight than the pattern calls for and as a result, it works up into a lovely, open motif, clearly showcasing the clever join-as-you-go technique. There are 25 solid colours in the range, from pastels to deeper tones – a definite bargain! rrP £2.03, www.bergere.co.uk

Mirasol Miski

100% baby llama, 50g, 75m/82yd, handwash only, dry flat in shade

Luxury with a conscience – a lovely range of aran weight from Mirasol, with a portion of the sales going towards the education and future of disadvantaged children in Mallkini, Peru. There are 22 shades in hues of blues and purples – we chose Jade (104), which has flecks of green peeking through, giving another dimension to the brilliance of the petrol blue. It produces a truly sumptuous fabric and when worked up in the Ammonite Scarf, it will feel like your own portable cuddle! rrP £5.95, www.mirasolperu.com
