This one-semester course will introduce learners to the various forms of the visual arts, such as painting, sculpture, film, and more. Students will learn how to look at a work of art, identify and compare key characteristics in artworks, and understand the role art has played throughout history. Through hands-on activities, virtual mu- seum tours, discussion, and research, learners will develop an overall appreciation for the art they encounter in their daily lives.

Art and Music Appreciation
This dual track program introduces the major themes, influences, and personalities that shaped most of Western cultural heritage. A dual track approach is used by the Learning Guide and provides a basis for synthesis.
After completing Part 1 of the course, students will be able to:
Analyze art with the eyes of an art historian by: Sorting art by common traits - sub- jects, symbols, and themes. Considering the elements and principles of art. Compare and contrast the sculpture of ancient peoples, considering its purpose, size, and de- gree of realism. Recognize and describe the major characteristics of the various "isms" of Europe and America. Identify examples of the outstanding art of Asia, In- dia, Africa, and Pre-Columbian America and discuss their purposes. Describe how your study of art has influenced how you see the world and art around you.
After completing Part 2 of this course, students will be able to:
Identify and define the basic elements of music. Recognize and describe the major characteristics of various styles of music. Identify examples of outstanding music from a variety of historic periods and cultures. Recognize and describe the role and influence of music in other areas of life throughout history.
