Mandarin II

This course is a continuation of a beginning level course that will introduce the stu- dent to a variety of areas of language learning. In this course, the student will learn listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through activities that are based on pedagogically proven methods of foreign language instruction. Throughout the five units of material (daily routine, animals, hobbies, the body, and descriptions), students learn to express themselves using an ever increasing vocabulary, present tense verbs, articles, and adjectives. Grammar is introduced and practiced in inno- vative and interesting ways with a variety of learning styles in mind. Culture is sprinkled throughout the course in an attempt to help the learner focus on the Chi- nese speaking world and their culture, people, geographical locations and histo- ries. The course is aligned to the national Foreign Language standards.

Spanish I

Students begin their introduction to Spanish with fundamental building blocks in four key areas of foreign language study: listening comprehension, speaking, read- ing, and writing. Students master common vocabulary terms and phrases; learn to comprehend a wide range of grammar patterns; instigate and continue simple con- versations; respond appropriately to basic conversational prompts; generate lan- guage incorporating basic vocabulary and a limited range of grammar patterns; analyze and compare cultural practices, products, and perspectives of various Spanish-speaking countries; and regularly assess progress in proficiency through quizzes, tests, and speaking/writing submissions. Each week consists of an ongo- ing adventure story, a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, numerous in- teractive games reinforcing vocabulary and grammar, reading and listening com- prehension activities, speaking and writing activities, and multimedia cultural pres- entations covering major Spanish-speaking areas in Europe and the Americas.
