AP Computer Science A

AP Computer Science A emphasizes object-oriented programming methodology with a concentration on problem solving and algorithm development and is the equivalent of a first-semester college-level course in Computer Science. It also in- cludes the study of data structures, design, and abstraction. Some previous pro- gramming experience is also important and necessary for students to have before attempting this course. An introductory course in C++, Pascal, Visual Basic, Java or similar course would be sufficient. HTML is not considered a programming lan- guage and would not give the students enough of a background to be successful.

A basic understanding of networks and the responsible use of computer systems is required, including:

 System reliability  Privacy  Legal issues  Intellectual property  Social and ethical ramifications of computer use

Prerequisite: Knowledge of mathematics at the Algebra 2 level and experience in problem solving. Students should be comfortable with functions and the concepts found in the uses of functional notation, such as f(x) = x + 2 and f(x) = g(h(x)).

Technology Requirements: Students should have access to a computer system that represents recent technology (Pentium III) with at least 128MB RAM, and, as a course requirement, they will need to install Java software. This configuration will enable students to run and compile Java programs efficiently. Each student should also have a minimum of four hours each week to dedicate to computer until the course is completed.
