Japanese II

Japanese II has been carefully designed to meet the standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These standards call for a method of teaching that focuses on successful communication through speaking, writing, reading, and listening, as well as a thorough grounding in aspects of cul- ture. Each unit embodies all of these standards in accordance with the theories de- scribed in this document. Unit activities blend different forms of communication and culture to ensure that the student meets all standards. Course strategies in- clude warm-up activities, vocabulary study, reading, threaded discussions, multi- media presentations, self-checks, practice activities and games, oral and written assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams. Learning activities in each unit are fo- cused upon a specific theme.

Latin I

Students begin their introduction to Latin with fundamental building blocks in four key areas of foreign language study: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Students master common vocabulary terms and phrases; comprehend a wide range of grammar patterns; generate language incorporating basic vocabu- lary and a limited range of grammar patterns; analyze and compare cultural prac- tices, products, and perspectives of ancient Roman culture; regularly assess pro- gress in proficiency through quizzes, tests, and speaking/writing submissions.

Each week consists of a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, numerous interactive games reinforcing vocabulary and grammar, reading and listening com- prehension activities, speaking and writing activities, cultural presentations cover- ing significant aspects of Roman culture or their modern-day manifestations, and assessments.
