Sweetness in Life
Finding the
By Sadhana G. Kohn
As women going through our daily lives, we can often get caught up in depression, anxiety or just being stressed out. While the following tips for finding life’s sweetness are by no means a cure for these afflic- tions, they are a great place to start creating what we all want--a life that makes us actually look forward to starting our day each morning.
1
Start with a decision to cultivate happiness.
How many of us have said this: “I just want to be happy.” Why can’t you be happy? Who says? Why do you feel the need to ask someone or something for permission? We often are waiting for someone or something outside of ourselves to save us or make us happy. However, this author discovered in her 20’s that there is no such thing as Prince Charming.
What we often don’t realize is this (repeat after me): Only I can make myself happy!! Keep saying this to yourself and eventually you will believe it.
It is your God-given right to be happy. So stop giving your power away and claim it!
Yes, you CAN create your own Garden
of Eden where you can grow your own happiness. Surround yourself with positive, caring people. Choose healthy things to eat and drink. Spend only a limited time on downers like watching the news. Look for solutions in your life instead of concentrating on the problems.

Look at what’s blocking you, but don’t let it weigh you down.
You can do this by taking an honest look at what’s in your way, without
judgment. This can be done in a myriad of ways. Examples include counseling, life coaching, self-help books, and journaling. Then you can work on clearing these obstacles with some of these tools.

Look on the bright side.
Everyone has something to be
grateful for. (If you look hard enough, you’ll find it.) When we concentrate on the silver linings of life, the bad stuff doesn’t have quite so much power over us.
A. Make a gratitude list every day for at least a
week.
Buy yourself a journal. You can get yourself a nice, fancy one at a stationery store, or you can purchase a composition notebook (this author’s favorite notebook) at a discount store for a buck or two. Then keep a daily list containing at least 5 things for which you are grateful--or at least list what you have for which you WANT to be grateful. Of course writing of any kind in a journal is highly reward- ing, as well as therapeutic.
Add one additional thing to your grati- tude list each day, so that you have 5 things on the first day, 6 things on the second, 7 things on the third day, etc. If you end up repeating some of the items on your daily lists, even better! Repetition is a great reminding tool. Your mood will improve every time! When you start to feel down, give yourself a healthy pick-me-up by re- reading your gratitude lists.
4
Get actively positive!
Whatever isn’t working for you
in life is what can hold you back and bring you down. If we want to find the sweetness in life, we need to limit or eliminate what doesn’t work for us. If this is not feasible, perhaps there could be a different, more positive way of looking at it.

To find the sweetness in life, we also need to concentrate on the healthy things that make us feel good and the things we DO want, including stuff that yields desirable results, like exercise.
Why do all this stuff to make ourselves
happy? Because we are worth it. (If
you don’t believe it now, you will someday soon.) Besides, waiting for someone else to do it is counter-pro- ductive--not to mention unrealistic!
Once you start treating yourself better, you will see that you deserve all the gifts that life has to offer. And you’ll start to attract more of the good stuff.
Life can be amazingly sweet. Taking steps to improve your life can be the most empowering and uplifting thing you can do for yourself!
