Bentall Centre Athletic Club
Consistently changing with the times has kept BCAC thriving for 25 years.
V
ancouver’s Bentall Centre Athletic Club (BCAC) has re-
invented itself many times since it opened more than 25 years ago, and it continues to reg- ularly make changes that benefit its clients and community.
56 Fitness Business Canada January/February 2009
The club originally opened in down- town Vancouver in 1982 under the name Tower Courts. Seven years later it was purchased by Bentall Capital and Great West Life, and the name was changed the Bentall Centre Athletic Club. As Tower Courts, the facility was frequented mainly by squash and racquetball play- ers who enjoyed the restaurant lounge after a good match. So when the health- minded 90s hit and the industry focus shifted from racquet sports to fitness, the club followed suit. Finally, in 2006 a mil- lion-dollar renovation brought the facil- ity in line with everyone’s expectations of a world-class club. Of course, racquetball and squash are still offered in the centre’s five
courts, but it is the club’s expanded programming and equipment offerings that catch many would-be members’ eyes. The 3,000 sq. ft. weight room, 3,000 sq. ft. cardio room, 1,000 sq. ft. group exercise studio and 2,000 sq. ft. boxing and martial arts area all add up to a well-rounded athletic centre. The club also supports environmentally- friendly travel by providing a 1,000 sq. ft. cage for bicycle commuters. BCAC caters primarily to busi-
ness professionals in the downtown core with the majority of members male between the ages of 30 and 50. Basic membership packages are $57 a month with towel service and laundry services and private lockers
