After the Nile the Amazon is probably the best-known river in the world, yet it is also one of the least visited. Jane Archer suggests some selling tips

It is the greatest river in the world, rising in the Andes Mountains and rushing 4,000 miles through nine countries in South America and emptying about one- fi fth of all the freshwater that fl ows into the world’s oceans into the Atlantic. The Amazon might be a river, but its lower reaches are so vast that ocean- going ships can sail on them. Sell the Amazon as a wildlife holiday. Your client’s animal checklist will include sloths, red howler monkeys, river dolphins, river turtles, tapirs (like a pig but related to horses), macaws, kingfi shers, toucans, black herons, hummingbirds and much more. A good camera is a must. Or sell it as an adventure – they’ll be cruising through the Amazon’s jungle-lined tributaries, seeing piranha fi sh and caiman (like an alligator) and trekking through virgin rainforest.

The Amazon is warm and humid all year-round (between 21C and 31C). High water season is December to May and low water season is from June to November, but this is the rainforest so clients should expect precipitation anytime. Cruise itineraries vary slightly between the seasons but whenever they go, clients can expect to see the same wildlife and birds.
GOING NATIVE
Suggest a river cruise as part of a longer South American holiday. Aqua Expeditions (
