What to do
NESSEBAR: On the southern Black Sea coast, next to the resort of Sunny Beach and 20km from Bourgas airport, Nessebar is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe’s oldest

settlements. It is home to a unique collection of medieval buildings and a preservation order protects the old quarter as a living museum. SOFIA: Although largely rebuilt after 1945, not all the eye-catching buildings in Sofi a, the capital, are modern constructions. The St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a legacy of the Russian Tsars, dominates the skyline. Sofi a has shrugged off its Communist-era image and is a lively town with good shopping and nightlife as well as plenty of green spaces. VELIKO TARNOVO: The medieval tsars' capital of Veliko Tarnovo is home to a beautiful monastery as well as being close to Rose Valley, where most of Europe's rose oil is produced. The Festival of Roses, in early June, is a lavish affair with fl ower parades, music and folk dancing. PLOVDIV: Bulgaria’s 'second city' has archaeological treasures, cultural festivals and arty neighbourhoods. It will be European Capital of Culture in 2019. It is close to the Rhodope Mountains, mythical homeland of Orpheus and site of the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery. Inside the monastery the Rila Cross took a monk 12 years to carve. It features 1,500 microscopic human fi gures, each smaller than a grain of rice.
TRIGRAD GORGE: At Trigrad Gorge in the Rhodope Mountains, close to the town of Trigrad, visitors can travel through a tunnel to see Europe’s highest underground waterfalls cascade 42 metres. There are around 150 caves in the area, one of which, Haramiiska Cave, is where archaeologists discovered evidence of human habitation dating back more than 4,000 years. This area is also popular with rock climbers and bird watchers.
