Following the trail of two greats

TWO SAT initiatives that are taking tourists beyond the traditional tourist track are a Walk in Mandela’s Foosteps (nelsonmandela. org) and the Mahatma Gandhi Trail (gandhi.southafrica.net). The Mahatma Gandhi-inspired attraction identifies 13 places that were influential during his time in South Africa between 1893 and 1914 and highlights include Gandhi’s home, which has been preserved as a museum. Mandela followers now have

every opportunity to follow his life beyond the cells of Robben Island: an app called ‘Madiba’s Journey’ can be downloaded for a complete guide to the great man’s life. A memorial has been built at Mandela’s capture site in Howick, KZN, while the Mandela House Museum in Soweto is a world-class visitor attraction. An eight-day guided tour commemorating 21 years of democracy in South Africa is being offered by Springbok Atlas Tours and a nine-night tour with Lion World Travel features Mandela’s Journey. footstepsofmandela.org; springbokatlas. com; lionworldtravel.com
