Hertz and Europcar UK have introduced Nissan LEAF electric vehicles in London, with rentals from £9.99 a day (Hertz). Europcar will introduce the green vehicles to other major UK cities shortly and plans to have fi ve per cent of its fl eet electric by 2020. Ken McCall, Managing Director Europcar UK, says: “Car rental is a brilliant way to try out electric vehicles.” Europcar has also launched a new smartphone app called ToMYCar that enables customers arriving at Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh airports, and London ExCel, to unlock the car


and drive it away. A map is sent showing the location of the car and drivers need only visit the desk on their fi rst rental. When returning the car, customers lock the car by pressing the ‘return vehicle’ button on the app. Avis claims it has shortened drop-off times to 90 seconds with its Rapid Return scheme. A wireless device reads barcodes on the hire car and issues a receipt for the rental including mileage driven and fuel used. Hertz has speeded up the process of picking up a car. Two hours before pick-up, members of its Gold Plus Rewards loyalty programme are emailed details of the car they will be driving and where it will be parked.
