18 philadelphia & the countryside

Visitors will be invited to tour the ships. Chocolate apparently played an important role in the lives of colonial Philadelphians and visitors can now learn the history of this all-American treat in a new exhibit

in the Betsy Ross House kitchen.  Transport: The city will soon roll-out its bike share programme, along the lines of London’s Boris bikes. Visitors will be able to rent more than 600 bikes located at more than 60

stations throughout city centre and beyond.  Accommodation: The 460-room three-

star Element by Westin is due to open this year. However, the long-awaited, and delayed, 295-room W Hotel, planned for the same new double tower, is now expected to open in 2016. Both hotels will be managed by Starwood (starwoodhotels.com). Other projects include one of the fi rst SLS LUX brand hotels to open in the US, a third Kimpton hotel (kimptonhotels.com) for the city, a boutique hotel on Frankford Avenue in Fishtown, and a new Four Seasons hotel (fourseasons.com) atop the under-construction Comcast Innovation and Technology Center.

Tourism talk

“Philadelphia is booming. Delta’s new Heathrow fl ight increases the number of daily fl ights from the UK to seven

(British Airways and American also fl y to the city). “I think we are spreading the word about

how Philadelphia is evolving, about all our fabulous new museums and other attractions, and people are responding really well. And compared to some other US cities, Philadelphia offers great value for money.

“We have the history but we also have plenty

of cutting-edge things to shout about, like new hotels, restaurants and great bars. It’s a nice combination that is attracting people of all ages and demographics from around the world. This year is a very important year for us, as the Pope will be visiting in September. We expect up to two million people to visit the city for this event and Philadelphia will be beamed all around the world. “For clients that have been to the US before and want to experience something else, we defi nitely have what it takes to fi ll four, fi ve or even seven days, but most people want to combine several cities and do a multi-centre holiday. With all the current airlift from the UK, you can enter one city and exit from another. You could start in Philadelphia, make your way north to New York or Washington or beyond, or head south.” Brian Said, Executive Director, Philadelphia Tourism
