Plenty of destinations claim to be ‘unique’, but in Japan’s case the word carries extra weight – and it has become increasingly affordable, too, says Ben Lerwill
T
he centuries Japan spent closed off from the outside world have left it with an exotic and hugely individual
culture – and it’s this that makes it such an appealing destination for travellers. The ordered neon futurism of modern capital
Tokyo and the ancient temples of former capital Kyoto are the country’s most visited spots, but Japan is a hugely diverse proposition with plenty of potential for repeat visitors. It’s also, increasingly, a more affordable
one. The exchange rate for Brits is far more favourable than it was just three years ago, making the country’s mix of high-tech urban
living, picturesque countryside and delicate cultural traditions even more accessible. Its food, its traditional homestays and its outlying islands are also big selling points. “Japan is enjoying a boom,” says James Mundy, PR and Marketing Manager at Inside Japan Tours. “It’s good value right now, with strong prices all round in terms of accommodation, sightseeing and getting around.
