IN CONVERSATION with Sabah

SABAH TOURISM'S SENIOR MARKETING MANAGER

ONES TO WATCH

There are exotic and strange experiences available all over Borneo and many are things that your clients can’t do anywhere else. Visiting the

Noredah Othman Senior Marketing Manager Sabah Tourism

Sabah is fast becoming the destination of choice for adventurers in Borneo. Whether its mountains, oceans, or the abundant wildlife, Sabah has something for everyone.

WHAT'S NEW

Sabah is an island and as more than 96% of travellers arrive by air we are always excited about new services. Big news for us is that

British Airways started fl ying into Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur at the beginning of May. From KL, onward connections to Sabah on the island of Borneo are easy. Two new airlines, Flymojo and Rayani Air, are due to join the domestic network here which will further increase accessibility into Sabah. Any additional accessibility is obviously very good for us!

SOMETHING QUIRKY...

orangutans and adopting one via the orangutan adoption programme allows them to be a part of the ongoing rescue work run at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Or how about seeing flying snakes or eating sago worms – a traditional dish full of protein – too? The via ferratta on Mount Kinabalu is another really memorable way to experience the rock slab that is Borneo’s highest peak.

WHY TRAVEL

For less well-known adventures, recommend the Maliau Basin, which has

similar facilities to Danum Valley but rewards visitors with its majestic seven-tiered Maliau Falls, reached only after a four-day trek into deep and dense rainforest. Only a fraction of this huge basin has been explored by humans so visitors feel like real pioneers when they enter it. If your client is an active type, suggest they compete in the Climbathon or The Most Beautiful Thing Ultra Trail. These events go into a raw section of the Bornean highlands and Mount Kinabalu surroundings to discover new views of the valley, fruit farms, rock gardens, rivers and mountains.

MOUNT KINABALU: Borneo's highest peak, Mount Kinabalu combines both the mountains and the sea for one glorious adventure (pictured)

MALIAU BASIN: A four-day trek into the rainforest rewards with a glimpse of the seven-tiered Maliau Falls.

DANUM VALLEY: Featuring the Global Atmosphere Watch Tower, which can be used by travellers to experience amazing sunsets. The Danum Valley is a hotbed for wildlife, it contains almost no human settlements, meaning it's truly a trek into the unknown for travellers.

MY PERSONAL FAVOURITES...

We asked Noredah Othman about her personal experiences and her favourite destinations in Sabah:

Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the Malaysian state in north west Borneo. Here you are surrounded by both the mountains and the sea. It is also a gateway to Kinabalu National Park and the home of the majestic 4,095m-high Mount Kinabalu.

 My favourite place in Sabah is Probably my most memorable

 Many countries can boast wildlife, but with Sabah it's a must see, from orangutans to fl ying snakes and the odd-looking proboscis monkey, it's a paradise for wild animal lovers. Clients can visit the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to come face-to-face with the so-called 'man of the forest'. Or for the adventurous type, the Danum valley and Makiau Basin offer treks into the wilderness to see these animals in their natural habitat. The latter experience will take travellers into the heart of the raw section of Borneo, for a truly wild trip.

experience in Sabah has been witnessing the sunrise atop the Global Atmosphere Watch Tower at Danum Valley. This experience coincided with the visit of Martha Stewart – an American businesswoman, writer, and television personality – to Borneo, when she reached the peak of Mount Kinabalu for the fi rst time. I’d really encourage visitors to explore both Kinabatangan and Danum Valley for their wildlife and also to head to the east coast of Sabah for excellent diving.
