ACTIVATING THE EARTH ELEMENT
i
n the fourth part of this series, I would like to focus on the Earth element. Just like the other fi ve elements, the Earth element has its yin and yang states. However,
Earth is a lot more subtle than the rest of the elements. A good way to see if Yang Earth is present is to notice if plants can grow. Yin Earth by contrast is earth that is dead and not fertile. Each of its states can bring good luck or calamities. But fi rst, let’s take a look at its relationship with the other elements. In the cycle of elements, Earth is
destroyed by Wood. T ink of a potted plant that makes the Earth infertile, sucking up all its nutrients to the point you have to add fertilizers to ensure the plant can keep on growing. In the exhaustive cycle, Earth is exhausted by Metal, hence metal is used as a cure to alleviate any bad energies emanating from the Earth element. And finally, to enhance the Earth element, we use Fire, the producing element of Earth. In feng shui, the Earth element can
be represented by the use of crystals, boulders or anything made from stone. Porcelain objects can also be used to represent the Earth element. However, as Earth energies are not the most auspicious, let us look at the applications to ensure we adhere to the taboos of the Earth element.
Eight Aspirations – Luck in Love & Scholastic Success! Under the Eight Aspirations theory, the Southwest governs the aspiration of romance. To activate for romance luck, one can place amethyst geodes in the Southwest. Not only is this good for single people looking for love, for married couples it will help ensure romance with your partner keeps on

growing. In addition to activating with crystals, romance luck can be enhanced by placing a light in this sector. Another Earth sector is the
Northeast. T is governs education luck for the occupants of the home. If you have children and would like them to do well in their studies, activate the Northeast with a crystal globe. Activate this sector in your child’s room as well, to ensure your child does well in exams. Also get your child a small piece of quartz crystal. Teach your child to have it present when studying or revising, and let them take it with them into the examination in their pocket.
Using the Earth element in Flying Star Formulas In Flying Star feng shui, the Earth element represents two inauspicious stars. Therefore we should avoid activating these stars from year to year. The first to look out for is the
misfortune star 5. Commonly known as the Five Yellow or Wu Wang, this star brings obstacles, loss of relationships, loss of money, accidents and generally very bad luck. T erefore, wherever this star fl ies to for the year, you need to clear out all Earth element items, and enhancing elements, from the sector. T en to cure the energies of this inauspicious Earth star, you should place plenty of Metal element cures in the sector. T is can be in the form of metal windchimes or Golden Mantra Pagoda made of metal. T e other inauspicious Earth star to look out for is the #2 Illness Star. Just like the Five Yellow, search out all Earth element items and their enhancers, and remove them from the sector the star fl ies into. As the name suggests, this star brings illness. In a
year where your personal chi energies are strong, it brings minor illness or the nagging fl u that keeps you just a little under the weather. But in years when your personal energies are weak, it could make you very sick indeed. Again, this affliction can be cured using Metal energies. But as it is mainly health-related, we recommend the Wu Luo made in brass to suppress the inauspicious Earth energies while enhancing health luck symbolically. Ironically, the most auspicious
star, the number 8 star, also belongs to the element of Earth. Wherever the #8 star appears, you should try to activate it with bright light and Earth energies. Having a yang water feature with a Dragon will also help activate auspicious Star 8 energies that will ensure smooth completion of projects, as well as encouraging good opportunities to materialise. When analysing the natal chart of the house in Flying Star, large crystals can be used to activate the auspicious mountain stars that bring good relationships to the occupants of the home. Crystals and objects made from stone are easily found. Many pretty collectibles such as swarovski crystals and beautiful Liu Li represent the Earth element. But since Earth energies can bring both fabulous good luck but also severe bad luck, it is important to place your Earth-element enhancers in the right place within the home. From year to year, check where the annual stars have fl own, to ensure you do not inadvertently activate an unlucky star.
