state reception rooms. Across the road stands the Old
Palace, a handsome edifice with its beautifully arcaded inner courtyard. It was originally the seat of the first counts and dukes of Wurttemberg and now home of the Wurttemberg Museum. It has the largest historico- cultural collection of works of art and royal treasures in Germany. Adjacent to the Old Palace are splendid buildings such as the imposing Collegiate Church built in the 10th century and the Museum of Musical Instruments in the Old Granary. Te Market Place and Market Hall are delightful to savour the local ambience with their bustling stalls selling regional food and products.
Posh Cars and Pigs On Parade Te highlight of our visit to Stuttgart is the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Te amazing and skilfully curated exhibitions greatly impress me even though I have no interest in cars. Built as double helix to represent its uniqueness like human DNA, it takes visitors on a journey through time in a lift to a height of 34 metres above the ground, and transport them back to 1886, the birth year of the legendary pioneering invention of Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz – the dawn of automobile. is categorised into “Legend” and “Collection”, with 160 vehicles and over 1500 exhibits charting over 125 years of the history of automobile from its invention to its present day in chronological order. Visitors are guided through the exhibition over seven floors starting from the top spiralling down via a ramp till the ground floor with stunning displays of the various vehicles produced by the company. I was fascinated to learn the
meaning of the three-pointed star of the iconic Mercedes logo, which symbolises the company’s invention for motorization “on land, on water and in the air.” I also learned that the brand name “Mercedes” was named after a little girl called Mercedes, the daughter of Emil Jellinik, a wealthy Austrian businessman who became a promoter and dealer of Daimler automobiles and initiated the use of these high-speed vehicles as racing cars in the early 1900s. It was registered as the official trademark for Mercedes in 1902. Today, the three- pointed star and the brand name of Mercedes are symbols of status and reliability. We concluded our tour of Stuttgart with a visit to the world’s largest Pig Museum (
www.schweinemuseum. de) housed ironically in a former slaughterhouse. Seriously! Winston Churchill once remarked, “I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals”. A pink bus with a giant pig’s head is parked outside the museum. Pig statues, sculptures, paintings, figurines and toys in all shapes and sizes are displayed in 29 themed rooms over an area of 800 square metres over two floors. Some pigs are anthropomorphised as humans in sexy lingerie, outfits or as human with pig’s heads, which are quite creepy.
