who would go on to become special friends. Many of us are nudging our seventies now, although in our heads, we are as young as ever. Perhaps it is this nostalgia that makes us so joyous each time we meet. Don’t misunderstand – we are not at all the lovey dovey kiss-kiss sort of friends. Not at all. We can get wildly excited at meeting up, we have a roaring sense of humour which bursts out in varying degrees of intensity, but we can also stay sedate and restrained! Remember, we were the pioneer women of Malaysia, and many of my time would go on to spearhead and excel in many fields of endeavour. Te early graduates of University Malaya today make up the backbone of Malaysia’s Establishment. Our small group of ladies is a small part of this generation. So my college mates have memories, opinions, viewpoints and strong principles. Each of us is an “expert” in our area, and every one of us has our pet peeves and our “thing”… My destiny was to become a hot- shot corporate woman, then go into business and in the past decade or so, I have become a premier global advocate of feng shui, astrology and spirituality. My college mates have

each gone on to become outstanding leaders in their fields, and I have fond memories of how we all started out, not really madly-ambitious but yes, having big aspirations and an attitude of opening our arms to what the world had to offer us. Which is why it is ALWAYS SO BRILLIANT getting together, because no matter what we may each be doing at any point in time, we bring to the group dynamics an amazing mix of experiences. We have many stories to tell, countless anecdotes to share and so much gossip – social, political and juicy - to bring to the table. And of course, we each have an opinion on everything! Our get-togethers can be as heavy as the hot pot steamboat spewing heat in front of us, or as light as a cold salad. And so it was at our last reunion lunch, hastily organized within a week of my bumping into Datin Halimah Mohd Said at the Bangsar Village supermarket. I was genuinely pleased to see her. Te last time we met must have been maybe six years ago, so we hugged and air-kissed and caught up, then decided to organize a reunion lunch. Datin Halimah comes from a

political background – her Dad was Chief Minister (Mentri Besar) of the

state of Negri Sembilan in those days when we were all at University. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the state of Malaysian politics, and she has a network of friends in Government that is truly impressive indeed. In fact, at the lunch I casually mentioned how proud I was of Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, whose recent Facebook postings were both timely and politically courageous. Tat was when Halimah said, “I’m having lunch with her tomorrow.”

I had wanted to reconnect with

Tan Sri Rafidah who had been my economics tutor at University, so when Datin Halimah invited me to come to her lunch, I immediately seized on the opportunity to do so. I thought her spontaneous gesture was so like her, as she has always been impulsively generous with her friends and contacts. I often thought Halimah should have gone into politics. She would’ve been such an effective Minister, bringing many ideas to the decision-makers of our country. Instead she went into academia, mothered three children and is currently the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren; all this, in addition to being a full-time career lady, lecturing in the language and linguistics faculty at University.

With Datin Halimah Mohd Said at the lunch she kindly invited me to when her other group of friends were lunching with Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz.
