bumps on Lone Pine (but be sure to tell them it’s a leg-burner)! There’s night skiing, too, and a fully-lit terrain park. This winter several runs from Mystic Chair will be improved or widened. In recent years Marmot Basin, Jasper’s local and
‘real friendly’ ski area, which has just turned 50, has invested heavily in new chairlifts which have transformed a resort just 20 minutes from the quaint little ‘railway town’ of Jasper.
3 QUEBEC The Francophone province’s main ski areas are Tremblant (75 this year), Mont-Sainte-Anne, Stoneham and Le Massif. Tremblant’s pedestrianised village is easily
accessible from Montréal and ideal for families. Some 50% of the terrain is graded black or double-black diamond. ‘Dynamite’ is the steepest slope in Eastern Canada with a 42-degree pitch. Luckily for me, it’s always been closed when I’ve been skiing there! The local ski schools offer the ‘Flaik’ - a personal GPS enabling youngsters to track their adventures
online – and for parents to know where they are! Stoneham and Mont-Sainte-Anne are a short
drive from Québec City - so close in fact, that even the city locals are known to pop into Stoneham for après ski. Stoneham has 39 trails, an Olympic- style halfpipe, four snow parks spread across three mountains and night skiing. At Mont-Sainte-Anne, the skiing’s on three sides
of the mountain with spectacular views of the Saint Lawrence River. Like Stoneham, Mont- Sainte-Anne also has night skiing, and a number of snow parks. The nearby cross-country centre has a network of 133 miles of trails. Just over an hour east of Québec City, Le Massif de Charlevoix offers the highest vertical drop east of the Canadian Rockies, with more spectacular views of the Saint Lawrence – as you ski down it seems like you’ll end up skiing into it! Le Massif is something of a topsy-turvy ski area:
it’s possible to arrive at the top and ski down. There’s over 100 acres of off-piste skiing, plus a snow park.
