Nordic Experience - Northern Lights and Arctic Nights -

One of the world’s wonders, the Northern Lights are but one major selling point for tour operator Nordic

Experience. GM Sue McAlinden and her colleagues highlight some of the many winter offerings...

The world continues to be seduced by the Aurora Borealis, better known as the Northern Lights, when ribbons of colour swirl and twirl above one’s head, lighting up the night sky with a mystical glow. While spotting the Northern Lights may be the prime reason for taking a winter break, a successful sale will depend on matching the overall experience to the expectations of your client. Iceland offers a rugged natural beauty with geological wonders whereas Norway, Sweden and Finland provide a true Arctic snow adventure. Our Nordic Experience experts share their favourite winter 2014/2015 highlights.

TROMSØ, NORWAY Debbie favours Tromsø in Northern Norway where two best sellers are the Northern Lights Experience and An Arctic Night to Remember. Tromsø, a university town in the heart of the Aurora Zone, is the self-styled capital of the Northern Lights. It is suitable for all ages and budgets, and with ‘soft adventure’ wilderness experiences such as husky, snowmobile and reindeer safaris. Northern Light excursions range from an eight- hour epic hunt to an evening spent under the stars around an open fi re or on a harbour cruise. The Northern Lights Experience is from £595pp for three nights with breakfast and

light buffet supper throughout. An Arctic Night to Remember is from £1150pp half-board for three nights (one in a Lavvu tent or Aurora cabin) and also includes snowmobile and husky safaris.

ICELAND In Iceland, Alannah suggests an escorted tour designed to maximise your clients’ chances of seeing the Northern Lights. Clients also discover Iceland’s iconic natural wonders including the geyser fi elds, spectacular waterfalls, the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon.

The Aurora Nights & Iceland’s Natural Wonders tour is from £1150pp for four nights

including three days of fully escorted travel, Aurora presentations and searches.

KIRKENES, NORWAY Steff suggests the SnowHotel Kirkenes in Northern Norway, a ‘boutique’ ice hotel. She recommends combining a night sleeping on a bed of ice with a stay in a unique ‘Gamme’ cabin, a modern birch pod with private WC/shower, seating area and separate bedroom, as well as huge windows with views of the surrounding countryside. Also included are husky and snowmobile safaris as well as ice fi shing for King Crabs. The SnowHotel at the Top of the World break starts at £1595 pp.

KIRUNA, SWEDEN Sue enjoys the fl exible and family-friendly atmosphere at Camp Ripan in Swedish Lapland. Ideal for families and couples, excursions can be anything from a fun snow shoe walk to an exhilarating snowmobile safari. Alternatively simply unwind in the hotel’s spa and pools. Abisko & Aurora at Camp Ripan is from £1155pp for three nights including an

evening excursion and dinner in the Abisko Mountain lodge and a thrilling husky ride.

HARRINIVA, FINLAND Jen just loves Harriniva in Finnish Lapland. This is a relaxed and informal wilderness lodge with many activities on the doorstep. Selected dates include direct fl ights as well as snowshoe, husky and snowmobile excursions in search of the Northern Lights. In addition clients will learn some wilderness skills, preparing and cooking lunch over an open camp fi re. A fully-inclusive Arctic adventure, Northern Lights Every Night in Harriniva is from £1365

pp for three nights. • FOR ALL TOURS:  01206 708888  reservations@nordicexperience.co.uk sellingtravel.co.uk
