the quirky side of travel - Douglas the hippo, gold band, mood blanket

T

he world of travel regularly throws up some weird and quirky tales.... such as:

DOUGLAS THE HIPPO There was a happy ending for an orphaned baby hippo named 'Douglas', who is now hopefully enjoying life back in the wild after being released in Zambia's South Luanga River. Douglas's plight was highlighted on Paul

O'Grady's Animal Orphans TV show: when just two weeks old and close to death he was rescued and started an ambitious rehabilitation programme at the Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust. Will Travers, President of the Born Free Foundation, which supports CWET, said of the rescue mission: "It is mission accomplished for Douglas! Born Free believes that the individual animal matters – every wild animal deserves a life worth living and to be free. "And thanks to the work of our dedicated partners on the ground in Zambia, we know there is one happy wild hippo living free again." Pictured opposite are Paul O' Grady and Douglas.

LOOKING FOR NANCY One popular Caribbean resort has come up with a novel way to underline its credentials as one of the region's most romantic getwaways. When a gold wedding band washed up on the beach at Cap Maison in Saint Lucia, resort staff chose the only right option available: they set out to reunite the ring with the undoubtedly heartbroken owner. After spoting something glimmering in the water just below the hotel’s Rock Maison, a private deck built on a shoal below the hotel’s Cliff at Cap restaurant, a closer look revealed the inscription 'I Love You Nancy'. So Cap Maison started a Twitter campaign, #ILoveYouNancy, to return the ring 'and restore the love that it symbolises'.
