Windows, a Tulsa-based window company. “The trade-off is we lose a lot of energy.” But there are ways to have a sunny home while saving energy. Most people know double-pane windows are more effi cient than sin- gle-pane windows because the layer of air between the glass provides insulation. Some windows take this idea a step further and feature triple panes or low-emissivity glass, a glass with a very fi ne metallic coating on the surface. Chambers, explained that low-emissivity glass, or “low-e” glass fi lters out the infrared spectrum or heat portion of light while allowing great visibil- ity. It can fi lter 70 percent of the heat transmitted through a standard window because it’s resistant to heat transfer and blocks damaging UV light. But it’s not just the glass that can save money, the thermal perfor- mance of frames must be considered, too. Batts said thermal frames are available and are as important as the glass


itself. Heat moves toward cold, so in the summer, heat moves into homes and in the winter, it moves out. Since metal is a conductor rather than a resistor, it conducts heat year-round. Therefore, metal frames are less effi cient than vinyl or wood frames.


Wood requires a lot of maintenance and it’s expensive to turn forests into window frames, Batts pointed out. Thermal barrier aluminum frames made of de-bridged aluminum are not as energy effi cient as vinyl, but they have a longer life expectancy. These frames are typically used commercially where windows are not likely to be replaced very often. Although they are available for residential use, they are heavier and harder to open. Despite the differences, energy-effi cient windows and frames can save homeowners money over time. “They can make a tremendous difference. You’re talking about an
