Record numbers exhibit at ISPO 2014
German outdoor-focused show hits new highs Organiser says visitor feedback is very positive By Jonathon Harker
A NEW exhibitor record was set for ISPO, with 2,565 exhibitors from 51 countries (2,481 in 2013) showcasing product at the Munich show. Visitor numbers hit 80,000, from 110
countries with approximately two thirds – 66 per cent – hailing from overseas, including Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France and Great Britain. This year, the trade show also experienced a strong increase of visitors from other nations, such as the USA and Russia. The net exhibitor space increased by 1,500 square meters to 104,720 square meters in total. “All relevant statistics are extremely
positive, and once again confirm our role as the international leading platform for the entire sports business,” claimed Klaus Dittrich, chairman of the management of Messe München.
In addition to a number of new special exhibition areas, such as for Padel Tennis in the new Health & Fitness Hall, received very positive feedback. Klaus Dittrich comments: “The desire for fitness, balance and vitality offers new revenue potential for the sports retail business. It was an important step to present the Health & Fitness trend in a designated exhibition hall at ISPO Munich, and create a new target group. We opened the doors for a new health movement. Our customers’ feedback was extremely positive.” According to the organisers, visitor
feedback was positive too: close to 75 per cent rated ISPO Munich 2014 excellent to very good, while an additional 24 per cent gave the event a rating of good. Last year ISPO ran its last ISPO Bike event after switching the event from August to July.

Britain on Foot gets No.10 boost By Jonathon Harker
THE GOVERNMENT and the Mayor of London have launched a campaign to promote physical activity across the country. The ‘Moving More, Living More’ initiative aims to create a more active nation to be part of the legacy from the London 2012 Games, and will be promoted as a ‘team approach’ across government and all sectors. According to the Outdoor Industries
Association’s Britain on Foot campaign (BoF), this is a major boost. CEO Andrew Denton has been involved in events and lobbying since its launch two years ago and, using the BoF campaign as the OIA’s calling card to government, Denton brought together a network of contacts and built the profile of Outdoor Activity at cabinet level, resulting in discussions at Number 10, in both houses of Parliament, in National Health strategy meetings and in a Parliamentary Commission on Physical Activity, all of which have contributed to this new campaign being launched, the OIA said. Denton commented: “I’m delighted with this cross departmental commitment from the government. The ‘Moving More, Living More’ campaign aims to promote recreational outdoor

activity and not just sport, which is totally in line with the objectives of BoF. The OIA is working closely with the Department of Health( DH), Public Health England (PHE) and the 2012 Legacy Team, and sits on many steering groups to promote open spaces and outdoor recreation as a major solution to the issue. There are many opportunities for people to get active, along with boundless creativity and hard work from activity providers across the country. The OIA is really looking forward to helping drive this project forward.” The team will be looking for stakeholders across the sectors, including local government, business, employers and local community groups and
individuals, to support the campaign by making a similar commitment. Prime Minister David Cameron said:
“The country was captured by the spirit of the 2012 Games, inspired by our sporting heroes and their many achievements. We now need to build on this, creating a nation that’s physically active and improving their health for the long term. We need to provide communities with the encouragement to come together and realise the physical and social benefits of being more active. Government, Local Government, business and community groups must now join together to help make this ambition a reality.”
