Eurobike on course for a new record

Hugely popular expo shows no sign of losing its appeal; Demo move expected to drive traffic to test ride day

By Jonathon Harker

THE ALL-POWERFUL Eurobike show looks set to hit new highs when it takes place again at Friedrichshafen, Germany, this August. According to organiser Messe

Friedrichshafen, registration figures – even at this early stage – indicate attendance is going to rise again for the super show, which is trade-only from August 27th to 29th, with an even more busy consumer day on Saturday 30th.

This year marks a departure for Eurobike’s Demo Day, which is going to be held close to the show grounds for the first time. Taking place on Tuesday 26th, the day before Eurobike officially starts, the demo event has

shunned its Allgau region home in favour of the east parking area on the show grounds. Industry commentators have speculated that the move makes the Demo Day closer to an unofficial extra day for the show, which is notoriously hard to cover in-depth during the event’s running time. However the Demo Day move has

garnered praise from the trade, according to the organiser: “The decision went over very well with our customers and we are expecting a considerable increase in participation.”

Moving the demo day and its 20km of

routes – on asphalt roads and unpaved paths – means Eurobike can convert the West Open Air Grounds, previously a ‘bike obstacle

Organisers say pre- registration is looking healthy

“We are seeing excellent registration figures and are on course for record levels again this year...” Klaus Wellmann, Eurobike

UCI set to pave the way for road discs?

THE CYCLE sport governing body has had a dramatic turnaround in the way it deals with innovation and technology, which it now “favours” as part of its “new approach”. Since former British Cycling boss Brian

Cookson took over the presidency, the organisation has shifting on a number of topics, but this might have the biggest impact on the cycle retail industry. Previously the organisation has – at times – been at loggerheads with those seeking to introduce new technology to the pro racing scene. Already – again since Cookson took on his role at UCI – the organisation has emailed bicycle suppliers informing them there will be a softening of the strict stance on rider positions for pro bike racing, tearing up rules dating back to 2000. It was at the UCI’s first meeting of 2014, held at the World Championships in Hoogerheide, Netherlands at the start of February, that it confirmed it would be changing its stance for 2014 and beyond. According to a press release from the UCI it said: “A new approach by the UCI in favour of innovation and technology, which begins with the new composition of the Equipment Commission: Brian Cookson (President), Martijn Swinkels (Commissaires), Carsten

technology, which begins with the new composition of the Equipment Commission”

Jeppesen (ProTeams), WFSGI (Industry), Professor Jan Anders Manson (EPFL), Alex Roussel (Mechanics) and Martina Schär (wider public). This follows the recent announcement of the arrival of aerodynamics engineering specialist Dimitris Katsanis as UCI consultant.” Read more on road discs on page 15.
