BICYCLE ASSOCIATION

Bicycle Association backs British Cycling’s Go-Ride

British Cycling and the Bicycle Association have forged a new relationship. Go-Ride schemes around the UK will now benefit from industry cash, helping provide opportunities for the next generation of riders

WHAT IS BIKE HUB?

THE BIKE Hub fund is a voluntary levy scheme which engages Bicycle Association members and independent bike dealers across the country in making a contribution to a national fund to “safeguard the future of cycling.” Contributors voluntarily donate £1 per £1000 of goods invoiced and this is matched by the manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers thereby creating a total contribution of £2 per £1000. In this way Bike Hub has raised over £350,000 p.a. for the last ten years. Major chains, multiples, supermarkets and internet companies – sadly – do not contribute to the fund.

The Boulting, Darnton, and Mills dream team

THE BICYCLE Association has become an official partner of British Cycling’s youth development programme, Go-Ride. The arrangement was announced at British Cycling’s annual gala dinner, held at the Hilton Metropole hotel in Birmingham in mid-February. The Go-Ride programme provides a fun and

safe way for young people to experience cycle sport, with over 300 Go-Ride clubs in communities across the country. The funding commitment from the Bicycle

Association will help to extend the reach of the Go-Ride programme. The funding, to the tune of £250,000 per year, is from the industry’s Bike Hub levy fund. This fund has been raising funds to safeguard the future of cycling since 2004. The industry sponsorship of the Bike It programme, delivered by Sustrans, has now come to an end, although the Bike Hub fund will continue to support Big Pedal, another school project run by Sustrans. Phillip Darnton OBE, the Bicycle

Association’s executive director, said: “It’s crucial that young people are given the opportunity to learn to ride their bikes safely and well, and to have fun doing so. If children

don’t have a chance to learn by their early teens, they will probably never cycle in their lives. That’s why the Bicycle Association is so pleased to support British Cycling and its Go- Ride programme, and to become the Industry Sponsor of British Cycling.” The Go-Ride programme provides the first step onto the Olympic Talent Development programme, with over 60 per cent of the currently funded riders on the Great Britain Cycling Team having progressed from the Go- Ride Clubs. British Cycling’s Director of Coaching,

Education and Development, John Mills, said: “We are thrilled to receive funding and support from the cycle industry, which will further strengthen the programme and help us to provide more opportunities for the next generation of cyclists.” Over the past ten years, Bike Hub has donated over £2.5 million to Sustrans, specifically to create, grow and maintain the Bike It Schools programme. Bike It was devised by the Bicycle

Association in conjunction with Paul Osborne of Sustrans in 2004. It started with just four

full-time Bike It officers – young men and women who worked with 10 schools each to help them become cycle-friendly for their pupils – and sometimes for their teachers too. Each school had support from Bike It for two years at least. Bike It officers ran school assemblies, devised special activities – cycle to school days, family picnics, bike breakfasts and rides – as well as organising Bikeability training and the installation of modern secure cycle parking at the schools involved. The industry’s investment has proved very

successful and the Department for Transport recognised this by matching the industry’s funds, and then increasing their support ten- fold. By 2011, there were 150 Bike It officers involved with almost 2,000 schools each year. In all, over 20,000 pupils, mainly in years five and six, learned the pleasures of cycling. The original aim of Bike Hub was to

safeguard the future of cycling by helping to fund ideas and projects which would get more children on bikes safely and learning to enjoy the fun of cycling. www.britishcycling.org.uk/go-ride
