The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included

This is what Tim Horton saw when he set up the camera on Mark Dance’s N scale Columbia & Western (above). Due to their small size and varying lighting conditions, photographing model trains is much harder than shooting pictures of full-size ones. Note that since Tim couldn’t actually fit his camera in the scene, he had to rely on a mirror to help get the view he wanted. The actual photo can be seen above leftand on our cover. The magic on com- puters–in this case a digital camera and Helicon Focus–allowed Tim to get the depth of field he needed. edge of the scene to protect the snow, and the mirror was positioned across the tracks in front of the trains. The ball head and camera are mounted on a 28″ camera bar which al- lowed me to position the camera closer to the layout than the tripod would otherwise allow. The camera was lev- eled and trained into the mirror as seen in the accompanying photograph. Prior to setting up the shot, Mark had explored different angles and composi- tions with a small point-and-shoot camera, and a printout of the desired composition was taped to the valance for reference. A 7″ LCD monitor mounted on the RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN
camera bar was used to aid in finaliz- ing the composition and adjusting the focus as the successive images were recorded. I use a cable release to actu- ate the shutter in order to minimize camera movement.
This shot is a composite of ten im- ages recorded at a focal length of 45mm with an aperture setting of f11 and an exposure time of ½ second. I selected an exposure bias of +1/3 stop to lighten the image slightly. For arti- cle photography I always shoot at ISO 100. The resulting series of images was combined in Helicon Focus and then cropped and reversed in Adobe Photo- shop®
