Kitbashing a Conrail-CNJ fire car
The end and side ladders are built up from styrene strips bonded to the carbody and drop grabs inserted into holes (left). The grating on
ciates No. 6601, 27″ grab iron and a No. 6602, 24″ grab iron. Both grab irons can be mounted horizontally on the rear of the car. Add two small vertical strips of .010″×.030″ styrene to represent the old headlight mount, then install a De- tail Associates No. 6605, 36″ grab iron mounted vertically on the rounded por- tion of the right corner where the corner wraps around to the side of the car. To complete the sides of the car, at-
tach two Detail Associates No. 6601, 27″ grab irons mounted horizontally, the first at the front of the left side and the second at the rear of the right side. Moving to the front of the tender, rein- stall the IHC vertical grab bar on the right side and install a Detail Associ- ates No. 2202, 17″ drop grab iron to the left of the grab bar, directly below the rivet strip.
Detailing the roof will involve adding vents and a running board which gets installed after the coal bunker is roofed over. The roof walk should be a suitable 1950’s style one, available from a number of manufac- turers including Kadee. To modify the roof walk for this in- stallation, cut the mounting pins from the end angles’ grating area. Then cut one of the lateral walkways from the roof walk by scoring it and snapping it. Place the running board on the car so the extra length is at the front. Mark the length starting from the rear wall and shorten the walk by cutting through it with a No. 17 blade. The lateral running board may be re- installed by cementing two short seg- ments of .010″× .030″ styrene strip to the underside of the extension so half

of each remains sticking out of the part, then applying cement to the ex- tensions and placing them under the roof walk edge; hold them in place until the cement dries.
The running board will be cemented directly to the new roof but requires eleven supports on the deck portion of the tender. The supports can be added using Detail Associates No. 2202 grabs. Place them on the centerline of the deck; start at the rear and space them 24″ apart.
Glue the deck to the tender body, then mark the locations of the sup- ports. Drill No. 80 holes for each, then insert No. 2202 grabs into the holes, leaving them loose. Place a level across
the top of the added roof portion, ex- tending to the last support, pressing all the grabs downward to the same height. Once the last support is at the correct height, it may be cemented in place from the interior. Check the height of the other supports, and once they are all even, they may also be ce- mented in place from the inside. After the supports have been added to the deck, the roofwalk can be added to the car. Place small amounts of ce- ment on the wide portions spanning across the grating, then place additional small amounts of cement on each sup- port and press the roofwalk into place. Other details to be applied to the roof are the fire nozzle, a cone top vent,
