the track arrangement is simple, com- pact and efficient, and allows for flexi- bility in servicing the plant.

Modeling

The CSM plant can be modeled a number of ways. An exact replica of the plant can be scratchbuilt from styrene if

there is adequate space on one’s layout or group of modules. Probably, the bet- ter alternative would be to selectively compress the structure or build it as a flat to conserve space. Though the CSM plant is of medium size or even small for an industry compared to something like an automobile plant, it would con-

sume a fair amount of space in HO and to a lesser degree in N scale. Kitbashing using Walthers or Pike Stuff plastic kits is another option. To model this plant closely would require making some ba- sic measurements, which would require permission from the company to be on the property. Optionally, “guesstimates” could be made from the photos, some- thing “generally like it” could be built, or one could scale it out using Google Earth®

aerial photos. It is on Montreal

arrangement of the spur, sidings, and single crossover can be replicated and is a case study in prototype flexibility, as it allows for a number of maneuvers to spot and pull freight cars. As to the plant switcher, trackmobiles have been offered in HO, although any small switcher would be appropriate.

moves, however, would only be possible using the rails, not the pavement. Hopefully this article will provide some ideas and encourage modelers to build a replica or representation of the CSM plant for their layouts. It is an in- teresting industry (circa 1970’s to the present) that will provide a destination for covered hoppers, and it could be lo- cated just about anywhere.
