ASF 50-ton trucks: HO scale Manufactured by

Tangent Scale

Models, P.O. Box 6514, Ashville NC, 28816; www.tangentscalemodels.com. A new truck is now being offered by

Tangent Scale Models that represents a American Railroad Association (ARA) “standard” 50-ton freight truck with 5′- 6″ wheelbase made by American Steel Foundries in the 1930’s. The U-section side frames were cast with integral journal boxes for solid bearings. The prototype truck had a spring plank which supported the truck springs in each side-frame and held the two side frames rigidly in place to keep the axles parallel with each other

and square

with

the

side

frames.

Spring planks were common in trucks manufactured before 1937. The new Tangent truck includes 33-

inch, all-metal wheel sets with smooth- back wheels and brake rigging. Tan- gent offers two versions of their new 50-ton truck. The trucks with .110″ thick tread (code 110) RP-25 wheels are part No. TSM-102. The trucks with .088″ thick tread (code 88) semi-scale wheels are part No. TSM-103. These are excellent free rolling

trucks appropriate for many 50-ton, pre-war freight cars. The price for a pair of these new HO trucks by Tan- gent is $6.95.
