the divisions I model as well as special instructions like speed limits and re- strictions, where and when to conduct thermal and brake tests, etc. I made up a timetable for the combined Nelson Subdivision (Cranbrook to Nelson) and Boundary Subdivision (Nelson to Mid- way) as several of the trains continue across both subs. In addition to train numbers, names and schedules, the timetable
also importantly identifies
the location of both train order stations and train register books as well as pass- ing siding lengths (in total effective 50- foot car lengths). Interestingly, it was standard practice on the CPR in 1970 to schedule only the trains outbound from the division point yard of Nelson (east- bound on the Nelson sub and west- bound on the Boundary sub). We specu- late that, because of the low train density, this made it simpler to accom- modate trains running late without is- suing a bunch of train orders and gave priority to trains getting out of the yard rather than entering it to make it easier on the yard crew. This speculation

• Bridge MP 41.7 – Barr Creek 10 mph [Digitrax 25] while locos on bridge
• Bridge MP 41.1 – Farr Creek 10 mph [Digitrax 25] while locos on bridge

To OS Your Train, please follow these 3 steps:
1.Dial the Dispatcher through the intercom handset. Wait for the Dispatcher to pick up and answer: “Dispatch”
2.Then respond “OS Station Name ” (i.e. “OS Farron”) and Wait for the Dispatcher to request you to continue with: “Go Ahead Farron”
3.To this respond: “Train Name/Number through at Time” (i.e. “Extra 8602 East through at 15:30”) then wait for confirmation from the Dispatcher before hanging up
• Place all trains marked for BN interchange at Cascade [ Track [CHSE]
] on the Cascade House
• Do not pick up cars marked with an [ MOW ] label which are for dedicated work trains.
RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN
seems to be proven correct by our model operations experience! Copies of the timetable are posted to the light valances around the layout. Train crews are given a small clip- board for the paperwork corresponding to the job to which they are assigned. An additional copy of the timetable is taped to the back of the board. The clip- boards have lanyards and Velcro tabs so they can be hung around the opera- tor’s neck or stuck to the fascia pretty much anywhere.
In addition to holding the train or- ders and clearances the crew may col- lect, the clipboard is a home for the spe- cific train instruction (TI) issued for each of the 20 or so jobs we may run in a session. The TIs are tri-fold pamphlets which contain everything you should need to know about your train. Informa- tion about the route and role of the train, train lengths, switching locations and car forwarding codes, and special instructions from the prototype employ- ee timetable are located here. In the fi- nal panel of the tri-fold TI is a location
Additional Special orders: • If required to meet power/car restrictions: a) double hill Cascade to Farron, or
b) call Dispatcher when departing Grand Forks to check for additional power. Dispatcher may call power + caboose from Nelson and run job as two Extras. An over- size train should be split so cars to be worked between Cascade and Nelson remain in the original Boundary freight.
• At Cascade assure train brake in place to restrain cars before splitting train (long trains may be pulled down the helix!)
• Permitted to use House Tracks at Cascade and Farron, and siding at Fife, to set out Westbound cars/facing point moves for Boundary Freight West Train 81
• All trains: Brake checks & standing inspect- ions must be performed at Farron [30 mins]
• Trains with greater than 3 cars per 1500HP or 15 cars total: Thermal checks must be performed at Coykendahl [15 minutes]
• Trains with greater than 4 cars per 1500 HP or 20 cars total: Thermal checks must be performed at Shields [15 minutes]
• Drop loaded chip gons (LD GTS) for Kraft in Castlegar yard. All other cars for Tadanac or Castlear to be returned to Nelson
• Register train at Castlegar/South Slocan.
• Observe yard limits at Cascade, Castlegar and Nelson.
• Register at Nelson on arrival
• Do not pick up cars marked “MOW” with a mauve label.

for a starting wheel report/switch list for the crews to use should they wish. This area can also be filled in by me be- fore each session so the crews know the initial make-up of their trains which is especially helpful if the trains are start- ing in hidden staging as the crews can- not see the starting make up of their trains.
As we gained more experience operat- ing the C&W, I marked up these train instructions with helpful hints, observa- tions, or new procedures so that the train instructions became “collective wisdom” intended to make things easier in the future. Although I found myself initially revising these TIs after each session, things have settled down now so that I really only have to revise them once per year or if I make a major change to something. Just as with the prototype, the Co- lumbia & Western has junctions where traffic may enter or leave other subdi- visions. In order for train crews arriv- ing at these locations to know which trains have arrived and departed
