used by most North American rail- roads. Reproducing the shade accu- rately has long been debated by model- ers. The brown shade of the review model is somewhat darker than the color shown in most color photos of pro- totype PRR cars. The lettering on the review model is sharp and clear. The stenciled built date is “5-35,” accurate for an early production car.

Bowser offers the ready-to-run mod- els decorated in the following ten paint schemes with six road numbers for each scheme. They are, in order by era: PRR circle keystone oxide red, PRR circle key- stone gray, PRR shadow keystone gray, PRR keystone gray, PRR oxide red “S”, PRR yellow m.o.w., PC green, PC green m.o.w., Conrail gray and N&W gray. This new Bowser ready-to-run model is excellent and appropriate for the pe- riod 1935 to the late 1970’s. It comes securely packed in a protective clam- shell plastic package. The price is $29.95.–JOHN RIDDELL

www.springmillsdepot.com. In the middle 1930’s, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad created a signature design element for its cabooses and freight cars. Known as the wagon top design, this design served the B&O from the experimental cars of the 1930’s through the Chessie System era.

In 1941, the B&O created the all steel I-12 caboose based on improvements to the original designs which were used on a select few cabooses in the late 1930’s. The B&O’s Keyser, West Virginia, shops were selected to construct these new ca- booses. They were built in two lots, the first lot having 100 cabooses numbered 2400-2499. Later, in 1945, Keyser Shops constructed another 25 units numbered 2800-2824.

Spring Mills Depot provided RMC with a sample of the first release of its B&O class I-12 wagon top caboose late in 2012. We noted that before we were able to complete and publish a review of this product, the Spring Mills Depot website indicated that the entire pro- duction run had been sold out. They have now announced a second release of these cabooses with new paint and let- tering schemes, so we feel that a review of this notable product is in order. Our comments regarding the first release sample apply to this new release as well. The second release includes six vari- ations of the renowned wagon top ca- boose to reflect variations in paint and lettering schemes and changes to de- tails such as marker lights, roof walk types and smokejacks. The manufac- turer has taken the extra effort to match the small detail changes which were incorporated through time. An unassembled, undecorated kit is also being offered. The six schemes offered are as fol-

Our sample from the first run is de- tailed and lettered to represent the ca- booses as they appeared during the 1955-1962 time period. It is supplied with a wood roof walk, slack adjuster and the small electric marker lights. The main structure of the caboose consists of a body, a floor and end fram- ing. The body is cleanly molded, with very fine rivet detail along the wrap
