Ride ‘em, cowboy! This rider is spending some of his off time just having fun. The ground cover in the corral is Lou Sassi’s famous

used it to get the anatomy and build of the bull right. The white metal steer I used for my bull needed a sack. It was formed with quick-setting epoxy using a sewing pin, then glued in place. Any color paint can be used for a

bull. I chose brown, tan, black and gray acrylic paint. The flank strap that is tightened to cinch the rear of the com- pleted bull and the bull riding strap that the rider holds onto were made

Ground Goop mixture spread over the plywood base, and the scene was finished with scale figures, a truck and grass clumps.

using tan-colored sewing thread. I decided to make the corral as a round pen. Midwest 4″×8″ HO scale lumber makes up the rails. The posts are thin dowels, although 8″×8″ posts would be suitable. A mixture of brown leather dye and denatured alcohol was used to stain the lumber. A stand for the cowboys to sit on was placed along the fence by the gate, and some cow- pokes were added sitting and standing

around the corral. Many other details can be added to such a scene. A Ground Goop mixture (a Lou Sassi recipe for textured scenery: see side- bar) was spread onto the base of the rodeo area. For scenery, choose what you like. Add grass, a few weeds, a few trees, vehicles and figures, and you have a one of a kind rodeo for your lay- out that will have your visitors amazed and asking questions.

This is one of those projects that can be taken even further and made more interesting through animation if so de- sired. I hope you find this project both interesting and inspiring. I know it was a great addition for my Louisville & Ro- seville Railroad.
