modeled in a buff color, and, while not superdetailed, it does have all of the necessary details like seats and the control stand. I am toying with the idea of adding a crew and painting some of the interior. That would be a nice addition if this unit is going to be the lead unit in a consist.
because Norfolk Southern keeps their heritage units spotless. Taking a quick look around the model, it is obvious that InterMountain reached high with the details applied to this model. All of the grillework is etched metal and su- per fine. The grab rails are bent wire and of the appropriate size, and the horn is the correct Nathan horn. The m.u. hoses are all attached and painted silver and black. The locomotive con- trol jumper is plugged into its recepta- cles and hangs nicely. The windshield wipers look perfect and are mounted beautifully. Even the little mirror on the engineer’s side of the cab below the window is present. I could not find a single thing that I would add to this model. I am particu- larly happy with the handrail thick- ness on the model. When you look at photos of models,
the oversized
handrails usually give away the fact that it is a model. These handrails are fine but durable. The walkway has a nice diamond tread pattern and is painted flat black. I hate seeing well- detailed models that have smooth and shiny walkways. It just looks wrong. I really like the cab interior. It is
The paint on the model is absolutely stunning. The color used to represent Lehigh Valley Cornell Red looks right to me when matched against the Nor- folk Southern heritage unit. All of the lettering is perfect, and there is no fuzzy overspray from sloppy masking. Every printed part is clean and crisp. There are small DANGER and warning decals all over the engine, and all are correctly represented. The white safety striping on the nose and the front pilot is clean, as well. I am always amazed at how well manufacturers can paint on three-dimensional surfaces like the pilot. On my best day I could never achieve results like this. The number boards and cab windshields even have black gaskets painted around them. I love how the m.u. hoses have been painted. The hose part is painted black and the gladhands are painted silver. These parts are usually just left black by most manufacturers. After looking at the amount of detail packed into this engine, I just get a feeling that some- body over at InterMountain was sitting there thinking for hours and hours about what else could be added to the model. That attention to detail is not going unnoticed.
The engine is beautiful, as is its per- formance. I have the non-sound equipped model and programmed the engine using my NCE Pro-Cab DCC system. That process took only seconds to do. I turned the headlight on and saw the nice incandescent-looking LED headlight glowing between the number boards. Next, a tap of the F6 button turned both ditch lights on with the same warm LED glow. I cracked the throttle and silently the engine began creeping forward. I measured the starting speed at .4 scale
