BRAZIL maintains one of the fastest growing games markets in the world and has the potential to overtake Mexico to become the largest market in Latin America. The country is certainly set up to achieve this with a population in excess of 200m and $2.5 trillion GDP – sixth largest in the world. Of this vast population, there is an estimated base of 40m gamers in the country according to the Brazil National Gamers Society. Brazilian consumers are willing to spend for their games, too. The country’s games market was last valued by analyst Newzoo at £2.6bn in 2012 – an increase of 32 per cent over the previous year. In terms of game sales, Brazil ranks in 15th worldwide with an estimated 600,000 games sold annually. Digital game sales have experienced huge growth within Brazil in recent years, largely due to

the high taxes applied to physical games. Boxed games in the country can cost £60 to £90 after taxes, while digital titles rank in at a far more affordable £40 to £55.

Another factor driving revenue in Brazil is the country’s ability to tackle piracy more successfully than other regions, boasting the lowest rate in Latin America. But these heavy taxes have led to gamers increasingly pirating their games – an issue that remains a


deterrent for publishers sizing up a move into the market. With the average wage of the Brazilian consumer at just over $11,000 (£6,700), piracy is set to continue in the country for the short term. Mobile gaming has taken Brazil by storm and now accounts for 40 per cent of the market’s revenue. The country’s digital market is also now increasingly becoming dominated by free-to-play and MMO titles. F2P gaming has experienced a 30 per cent boost in revenue since 2012, which has resulted in a 28 per cent decline in pay-to-play titles. Despite this, subscription-based games such as World of Warcraftcontinue to dominate as F2P giants like League of Legendsbegin to close the gap. The country is also home to the Brasil Games Show. This year’s event attracted over 150,000 visitors and 50 international companies.
