ABOUT THE MARKET
WITH in excess of 80 development studios having chosen to touch down in Indonesia, the region has found itself to be hotbed of impressive development talent. Most studios focus on mobile games but despite the number of developers, the biggest publishers have yet to dedicate a base in the region. Instead the publisher landscape is made up of smaller firms behind popular online games, including Indonesian versions of Korean MMOs. “Unlike retailers and distributors that focus on the traditional platform market, nearly all Indonesia developers focus on the mobile market. Their challenges are mostly down to simple cases, such as minimum opportunity, no government support, and a weak talent pool,” says Remy Fabian, editor-in-chief of

Retailers try to educate buyers about the benefit of legitimate games through online modes and DLC.

“To make matter worst, Japanese mobile publishers are quickly entering our local market. I believe they only have five years to grow big and compete with foreign companies.”
The situation with piracy in the region is improving, but still outstrips legal purchasing. “While piracy is slowly fading in our local market, legitimate software buying remains the minority by numbers,” adds Fabian. “To overcome this situation, retailers will usually try to get hold of gaming communities or educate the potential buyers on the spot by showing a benefit of legitimate games through online modes or DLC. These methods were proven effective by one local retailer and coinciding with the rise of Indonesian economy, they are certain the number of legitimate software buyers will get stronger.”
