ABOUT THE MARKET

THE RISE of specialist games retailers has greatly increased the opportunities for publishers to find success in India. Last year saw a surge in midnight launches for blockbuster games such as Assassin’s Creed III and FIFA 13, bringing the nation’s games market closer in line with those in the West. Some chains are even embracing the digital era, with Game4U.com launching a downloads portal. However, there are still many economic hurdles to overcome. “India is a price-sensitive market,” explains Anand Khemani, CEO of distributor E-xpress Interactive. “The lower per capita income, plus all the taxes and duties, push costs further and make the SRPs steeper. We work on very thin margins trying to achieve the best possible SRPs so that the market can grow.”

Advances in retail are overshadowed by the wealth of development talent. Most studios focus on mobile gaming – unsurprising, given how

popular this sector is in India. While smartphones are still considered too expensive for most consumers, the penetration rate of Java means there are plenty of opportunities for mobile developers and publishers.

In fact, EA generates up to $5m per year through mobile games in India. “There’s been a lot of buzz around the Indian game development industry over the last year or so,” says Catapult Business Solutions founder Chris Stanton-Jones.

“The country’s fast-growing mobile phone user base and the steady rise in smartphone sales have seen studios mushrooming all over the country in pursuit of ‘the next Angry Birds’.” Social gaming is also popular, with more than 40 per cent of Indian Facebook members using it to play games. Research suggests India could become one of the Top Five countries for social gaming in three years. For more information, point your browser towards MCVIndia.com
