ABOUT THE MARKET
ISRAEL maintains a small market made up of independent retailers. The number of these specialised stores has grown over the past few years as, unlike rival territories, Israel has no large retail chains that specialise in video games. As a result, consumers instead turn to the country’s department stores with most offering a comprehensive selection of video games. Israel’s games market is one that’s on the rise as more of the country’s consumers take an interest in video games. Noam Weisburg, CEO of distributor EdLee Entertainment tells MCVthe country’s market has shown “single digit” growth over 2012 and is confident this growth will continue. “Relatively to Israel’s size there is a good gaming audience. As for what games consumers are playing, Israel has previously maintained a large PC market. Whilst there’s still a large PC audience in the country, home consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PS3 have increased their market share in recent years and the market has become more competitive.
UK market and the Top Ten list of games is very similar to those countries,” said Weisburg.
Despite this popularity, Nintendo continues to lack an official distributor within the country. As a result, the platform holder has very little presence in the region and the Wii U and 3DS consoles have a very limited market.
The country’s distribution landscape is made up of three key players: ISFAR, Hed Arzi and EdLee Entertainment. These firms handle distribution of the games industry’s biggest publishers, including Sony, EA, Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, Sega, Disney, Namco Bandai, Bethesda and NCSoft. While Israel’s game market is on the rise, Weisburg identifies the country’s high rate of games piracy as an issue it must overcome. “There continues to be a high piracy rate on PC and Xbox 360 titles, particularly those with single- player modes,” said Weisburg.
