ABOUT THE MARKET

SWITZERLAND is one of the world’s richest countries by per capita gross domestic product and boasts the highest average wealth per adult of any country in the world. This wealth has translated well to the interactive entertainment industries with consumers having a higher disposable income on average than neighbouring nations. Despite the financial difficulties experienced across Europe, the Swiss games market managed to maintain flat sales of both software and hardware. In 2011, these sales only declined by a single per cent. The weakened value of the Euro saw the revenue of the country’s games market to fall by 14 per cent to 296m francs (£203m) reads a report by analyst Euromonitor. Whilst caution remains amongst consumers over expenditure as the economic troubles linger, it is hoped that the introduction of Microsoft and Sony’s next-gen consoles will stimulate sales within the country’s games market.

Consoles and handhelds remain most popular within the country with 2.9m titles sold on the platforms in 2011.

Both home and handheld consoles remain most popular within the country and account for the majority of hardware and software sales within Switzerland. The Euromonitor report also found that in 2011, over 2.9m titles were sold across these platforms alone, in addition to 386,000 games machines.

But consumers in the country hoping to get their hands on the Xbox One will have to endure a longer wait as Microsoft announced the console will be delayed into 2014 along with a host of other nations across Europe.

Sales of PC titles pale in comparison to the popularity of consoles with only 700,000 units sold within the country across the same period.

Both Microsoft and Sony have strong presences in the territory with their home consoles, and the PlayStation 3 remains the most popular console amongst Swiss consumers. Nintendo is the undisputed leader in the country’s handheld market with the success of its 3DS console.

The biggest retail players in the Swiss games market include hypermarkets, supermarkets, mixed retailers and departments stores, which account for the majority of games sales.

But similar to the markets in other countries, online physical games sales are gaining significant growth. The value of online games sales within Switzerland tripled during 2011 alone and many of the countries retailers have opened their own e-commerce sites in order to benefit and boost their sales.
