ABOUT THE MARKET


THE NORDIC nation of Denmark houses a retail market consisting of specialists, hypermarts, bookstores and indie music chains all selling video games. However, like the rest of Europe, the market has suffered in recent times. “The Danish market is down like in other countries in Europe”, says Koch Media’s Nordic general manager Martin Sirc. “More focus is on the bigger brands, and less success registered for the middle and smaller titles. And the next-gen consoles are eagerly awaited, like in the rest of Nordic.”


The region has also experienced a challenge presented by the power of social media and smartphones shaping Danish tastes towards handheld gaming.

Alongside the growth in mobile and tablet gaming, the region has also seen a boom in developers. “Nordic developers have had significant growth with players like


smartphones and tablets,” added Sirc. “Consumers spend more time on social media and digital distribution on PC is growing rapidly. Nordic still has a healthy PC market but digital is taking a bigger chunk of this.”

Nordic has traditionally been the home of many successful developers and the success continues.” With a high level grasp of the English language and Denmark taking up a healthy chunk of the Nordic market, publsihers could see the region as a perfect stepping stone into Nordic territories. Sirc states: “Denmark represents approximately 22 per cent of the Nordic market and gaming is socially accepted in all age groups. The level of the English language is very high so there is no need for localisation. Publishers should see Denmark as a part of Nordic, offering overall good business rather than an individual territory, since you can use one SKU for the whole of Nordic.”
